Augusta Dropout Prevention Summit

September 19, 2009

Convener: Richmond County Board of Education

Estimated Attendance:

Summit Location: John Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School in Augusta, Georgia

Highlights:

Richmond County’s One/Third Summit was designed to share best practices about effective education programs. The title of the summit reinforced the fact that one-third of Richmond County students are not graduating from high school on time. Over 250 individuals attended the summit including representatives from youth, parents, business and civic leaders, policy makers, educators (P-12 and higher education) and the faith based community. Superintendent Bedden of Richmond County Schools provided a data analysis of the schools that are most challenged and workshops were held to share best practices. The goal of the summit was to raise awareness about the issue within the larger community and to launch an action planning process to improve graduation rates.
