Applications for the 2012 Excellence in Summer Learning Award are now available. The award, presented annually by the National Summer Learning Association, honors programs which demonstrate outstanding ability to advance academic success and encourage healthy development for youth in grades K-12. The application deadline is February 10.
Research has proven that most children lose essential math skills in the summer months, and lower income kids are especially disproportioned to lose their reading skills. The Excellence in Summer Learning Award is designed to congratulate programs that successfully curb these losses and provide an institution where children can thrive in a time that would ordinarily see them without quality supervision.
Award winners will be highlighted in the NSLA’s national conference and given attention by national media outlets. Non-winners receive benefits simply by applying. For every application submitted, reviewers will give feedback sharing their in depth research of the program, emphasizing areas in which applicants are excelling and in which there lie opportunities to improve.
The National Summer Learning Association, an America’s Promise Partner, is committed to ensuring that every child is safe, healthy, and engaged in learning over the summer. The Association focuses on increasing the number of high-quality programs for low-income students, raising awareness for the importance of summer learning, and increasing funding for such programs that provide opportunities for children who otherwise have none.
