America’s Promise Alliance Reacts to Announcement that States and School Systems Will be Allowed More Flexibility in Measuring Student Progress
Statement made by Marguerite W. Kondracke, president and CEO of America’s Promise Alliance
WASHINGTON, DC –“We at America’s Promise Alliance are pleased to see that the President has taken action to rectify what has become an unrealistic and burdensome law, without compromising high standards. While the No Child Left Behind legislation brought needed accountability and focus on the expectation that every child deserves a great education, nevertheless, aspects of the bill have become increasingly difficult and impractical to implement at the school level.”
I commend the President and Secretary Duncan for this bold step so that waivers may be granted, especially in the face of Congress’ inability to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Giving states more flexibility to meet standards and make local decisions will allow schools to measure success properly, and will provide parents with a more accurate picture of their child’s progress.
The continuing emphasis on innovative methodology and quality teaching, data review and the transformation of low-performing schools are very positive aspects to this action. We support the US Department of Education’s quest to provide world-class education for all students across the nation and America’s Promise Alliance will continue to be an active partner in this endeavor.”
